Tonhain Season 3

𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 – 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 officially has begun!

For the third season, Tonhain Kollektiv explores migration not only as the movement of people across space, but also as an exchange of ideas, memories and cultural influences.

For me, this idea of movement became a starting point for the visual language of the series.

During the previous season, I worked with glass and prisms to introduce a sense of distortion and fragmentation into the photographs. I wanted to move away from that approach this year and explore movement more directly, not through something placed in front of the lens, but through the movement of light itself.

The approach also connects to my studio work, where I have been exploring light dragging as a way of introducing movement and time into a still image. Bringing this technique into the Tonhain series felt like a natural choice.

In the studio, I use flash to freeze a fraction of a second and create a sharp, precise moment. In a concert setting, however, I cannot work with strobes. The process therefore becomes more subtle. The image needs a certain amount of stillness to register, while movement during the exposure leaves behind traces.

These photographs are the first in a series that will grow throughout the season, and my visual response to the concerts.
